Gateway Chamber Ensemble
The Gateway Chamber Ensemble has been hailed as “a top notch performing ensemble that now enters the big leagues” and for presenting “world class” and “flawless” performances. Conducted by Gregory Wolynec, the ensemble represents a flexible pool of instrumentalists specializing in the programming of masterworks of the past and present. The ensemble gave its debut in the Fall of 2008 with a performance of Arnold Schoenberg’s milestone Chamber Symphony, op. 9. and is comprised of the talented performance faculty of Austin Peay State University as well as fellow professional musicians from Nashville and beyond. Their debut recording for Summit Records, featuring Richard Strauss’ Serenade in Eb and Mozart’s monumental “Gran Partita” serenade, has been lauded as a leading rendition for both works by Fanfare Magazine who also said “…I doubt that you will hear a recording with better musicians anywhere.” Performing regularly in APSU’s acoustically splendid concert hall and other venues recent performances have included works ranging from contemporary composers Chen Yi and Elliott Carter to traditional repertoire by Antonín Dvorák and Louis Spohr.
Mission Statement:
The Gateway Chamber Ensemble provides a fresh approach to masterworks of the past and present, including those that lack a traditional home in the repertoire, thereby enriching the lives of audiences in Middle Tennessee, including members of the Austin Peay State University and surrounding community, through concerts and educational outreach.
Artistic Statement:
The Gateway Chamber Ensemble is a unique professional ensemble specializing in the performance of masterworks of the past and present for fewer than 20 players. Comprised of a flexible pool of soloists, the ensemble seeks to promote challenging repertoire that lacks a traditional home in cohesive programs that enrich the Middle Tennessee and Austin Peay State University communities, as well as the larger musical community. The ensemble is firmly committed to performance and recording at the highest standard of artistic integrity, the championing of American composers, fresh approaches to classic works and the illumination of neglected masterworks. The Gateway Chamber Ensemble is also an educational institution that strives for the development of new audiences, embraces educational outreach and seeks to break the traditional barriers between audience and performer. Gateway- where the old meets the new.
